Variety is the spice of life for promotional staff

April 17, 2011

Brand ambassadors, promotional staff, promotional models, spokes models, trade show models, promotional freelancers. These are just a few of the numerous job titles and names for staff who work in promotional activities – and this is before we look at the diversity of employment in this field.

What is a promotional staff worker?

A promotional model or staff member is someone who is hired by a company or agency to drive consumer demand for a service, product or brand by directly interacting with potential consumers.

This is a job of versatility, intelligence, sensitivity and engagement because promotional staff must aim to make the product or service appealing to consumers. In many cases, promotional staff also need to think on their feet because their interaction time with potential consumers may be very short.

Why promotional staff can "sell" the products

The job of a promotional model or ambassador can make a huge difference to product sales – and far more than many traditional forms of advertising and marketing such as TV, press and radio. When a consumer meets or sees a promotional model they are being directly informed by a real-time human about a product or a service in a way that isn’t usually possible on TV, radio or in print.

A good way to describe the concept of promotional marketing is qualitative advertising, rather than quantitative.

Excellent promotional marketing wil create positive and long-lasting memories for consumers.

So what kind of marketing are promotional staff responsible for?

There are so many types of marketing that promotional staff can be involved in for clients but here are a few areas:

* Raising product awarenes

* Giving insight and attention to details about a product

* Creating an association between the product and a concept for the consumer.  For example, reliability, beauty, sex appeal.

Variety is the spice of life for promotional staff

As we stated at the start of this blog, the range and diversity of roles in this sector is huge and encompasses a great deal of variety, depending on client expectations and products or services. You can be sure that no one job will be the same so if you enjoy an ever-changing and challenging working day then this could be the career for you.

It’s vital, too, that you are capable of quickly grasping the goal of a client, whether it’s to promote a service or a product. Promotional staff need to be intelligent and quick thinking; capable and intuitive. Good looks aren’t always necessary and it does depend on your ability to “sell” a product and engage with potential consumers.

In a future blog we will be asking various promotional staffers what they enjoy about their work.
