Promotional staff: The Event Manager
April 27, 2011
Promotional and marketing staff are involved in a wide variety of work. No day is the same and many who are employed in this sector say they love their jobs. Here we continue our series, speaking to the people who are employed in promotional staff positions, to find out more about what the work entails.
Pawan is an event manager and field marketer.
What is your job?: I run the promotions and events. I work nationwide but particularly in the north west and Liverpool. In some cases I'm like a problem solver. Kind of like, Winston Wolf in Pulp Fiction, only without the mess (touch wood!).
Tell us more about the role: Every day in promotions is like a day on the farm: every meal a banquet, every pay check a fortune; every product a must-have, every consumer a king.
Do you work across a range of roles?: I have probably done all there is to do in promotions and field marketing, including: actor, auditor, brand ambassador, costume character, demonstrator, driver, event manager, leafleter, merchandiser, rigger, team leader, technical coordinator...and probably some other stuff I've forgotten!
Have there been any recent highlights of your work: My best job of last year was during the run-up to Christmas. I was Pawan the Elf (what's your favourite colour?) helping Santa in the Liverpool On Ice Grotto. It was very cold, but so much fun.
How did you get into this kind of work?: I kind of fell into promotions. I had just been to Berlin for a film course, and came back jobless. A friend of mine was in the game, like EA Sports, and got me a job handing out the free Metro for The Network. I went from merchandiser to driver to team leader – and never looked back.
Has it been a good career option?: Yes! Most people in promotions do this because it is flexible and it gives them time to do other stuff. It's exactly the same with me. In my spare time I write, and, believe me, some of the characters I meet on my travels are great inspiration.
Would you recommend promotional work to others? I'd recommend it to anyone looking for variation, flexibility, fun and the potential to travel to far off places and meet exciting and unusual people.
What makes you good at your job? This type of work is for people who are good at speaking to anyone, communicating well, forming relationships quickly and enjoying every day – but are still prepared to work. I guess that's me.
Tell us more: Promotions can be a lot of fun, but they often cost a lot of money, so arriving late and leaving early is not an option. Realising that you are there to do a job is important. As in anything in life, we must strive for Quality. It deserves the capitals!
